Diction and syntax are both very important when putting together an essay. To answer this question, I believe an example of each term may help:
Diction is the choice of words to convey a feeling. If your goal is to persuade
the reader, use words to do so.
Example: I would greatly appreciate your help in the matter. vs. You need to help me.
Syntax, on the other hand, is simply the arrangement of words. It allows the average reader
to read and understand what is written.
Example: The boy responded quickly.
The boy quickly responded.
Quickly, the boy responded.
