Miller uses dialogue to give the play an authenticity it would otherwise not have. There are numerous familial and societal tensions or conflicts to keep the reader engaged. John and his wife, John vs Abigail. John vs his community. Forgiveness vs. judgment. The play was written to draw parallels with the Communist witch hunts in the Fifties, but there have been other times of hysteria and overreaction that keep it relevant even today.
