To start, we must define what an exposition is. An exposition is information given at the beginning of the story, which features background details of the characters and of the general setting. Oftentimes, expositions will include insights on events that happened before the story started.
In The Garden Party, we meet Laura, a well-off young girl living in a large manor in the 20th century. The exposition includes her, her sister, and her mother setting up for a garden party in their lavish home on a hill. Laura assists with setting up more than her mother does, as she is the "artistic" one. Meanwhile, she is invited to lunch in the village, where she is met with a grieving wife and the corpse of her husband. The exposition of this story is meant to show the reader how well-off and ignorant the main characters are to the suffering in the village below.
