What books will help be write and speak better?

As a person with aphasia, the book that I used to read out loud to help with me with with pronunciation is the Bible. This is because it is a challenging book to read which required me to slow down my speech to a point that I actually began to understand what was written. Apart from its significance as the Christian scripture, it is often cited as a primary source for for the ancient civilizations surrounding much of the Mediterranean. As I love to study ancient civilization, the Bible was a must for me to read.

Other than that, I recommend any book that challenges you, whether in vocabulary, diction, topic, or style.

There are so many books available on this subject. It really depends on what you are looking to write; do you want to write academically, professionally, fiction/nonfiction? I often suggest Stephen King's, On Writing. Also, Jeff Goins, You are a Writer (So Start Acting Like One).

Reading regularly in general will help you write and speak better since you will pick up new vocabulary words and literary expressions of all natures every step of the way. And the more one practices reading and writing in everyday life, the more literate one becomes in the long run!

There are a variety of books that one can use to improve writing and speaking skills. They fall into at least three categories:

1. Stylebooks. Stylebooks give advice (some more general, some very specific) on the nuts and bolts of writing: grammar rules, style rules, and formal writing requirements. Strunk & White is a popular stylebook, but I've really benefited from Joseph Williams's book, Style: The Basics of Clarity and Grace. Not all stylebooks have the same perspective (some like to be prescriptive: tell you the rules and hold you to them; some like to be descriptive: tell you what recognized writers and speakers do, and let you follow that; get both kinds and look for those that attempt a balance as well).
2. Writing & speaking craft. These books go beyond the elements of style and try to develop one's skills through advice and practical exercises. I really like The Writer's Workshop by Greg Roper and The Office of Assertion by Scott Crider. There are lots of good books of this type, often written by accomplished writers--but be warned that the best authors aren't always the best at explaining or teaching their craft.
3. Rhetorical Handbooks (contemporary). There are a good number of these, but my money is on Ward Farnsworth for the best collection of contemporary handbooks you can find. Farnsworth's Classical English Rhetoric, Farnsworth's Classical English Metaphor, and Farnsworth's Classical English Style are worth every penny. A good one-volume compendium is Edward Corbett's Classical Rhetoric for the Modern Student.
