One way to think about the difference between Past Simple tense and Present Perfect tense is this: Past Simple talks something that happened in the past, but is not happening now. Present Perfect talks about something that happened in the past, and is still happening now.
For example, "I have worked for seven years." This means I was working seven years ago and I'm still working today. But, "I worked seven years ago," means I worked at that time seven years ago, but I'm not working today.
