Walden was written by Henry David Thoreau in a series of 18 essays called "Life in the Woods." It was published in 1854 and was an important contribution Transcendentalism in New England. This book was a record of Thoreau's experience in every day simple living on the northern shore of Walden Pond in eastern Massachusetts (1845–47).
When I was in high school we had to know his works.
