Freefall is defined as any situation where an object has a constant acceleration. In the case of a ball thrown upwards, the ball will always have the same gravitational acceleration acting on it throughout its trajectory. Even while the ball is flying upwards, the only acceleration acting on it is gravity, which is a constant acceleration. Therefore, the ball is still technically in free fall even though it was thrown.
