To classify a fruit as simple, aggregate or multiple, think about flower morphology, in particular the number of ovaries that give rise to the fruit. For example, one ovary gives rise to the squash, a simple fruit. Multiple ovaries of a single flower give rise to the strawberry, an aggregate fruit. The pineapple is a classic multiple fruit because it is derived from the ovaries of many flowers. Importantly, fruits can also be labeled “accessory” if parts other than the ovary give rise to the fruit; strawberry and pineapple are good examples of accessory fruits.
