English - Van Winkle

An element of a national mythology is that it is written to celebrate the nation’s heroes.

How is this reflected in “Rip Van Winkle”?

Select the two correct answers.

  1. Because of his positive outlook and willingness to be of service, Rip is beloved by his community.
  2. Rip is portrayed as an endearing underdog who must endure endless nagging from his wife.
  3. Rip stands out among the villagers for his strong work ethic and aversion to gossip.
  4. After years of abuse, Rip leaves his family home for an adventure and finally finds freedom.

My suggestion, to answer this question, is to read the story and look at the answers, picking the two answers that go together. If you do this, I believe the answer is quite obvious. I would also suggest that you work with a ELA/READING tutor in order to be able to learn several strategies for answering questions like this on a test, even when you are not sure of the answer. If you had that kind of strategy, a multiple choice question becomes an odds game, when you are not sure of the right answer.
