1. The canoe hit a series of rapids. They were swept into the river. They were carried away by the current.

2. Phil was a college student. He had a great business repairing guitars. He repaired them with his brother.

3. Littering is a problem in many cities. Nothing is being done about it. It is a huge problem.

4. Kelly Campbell dropped the batter's third strike. She quickly threw it to first base.  The batter was out at first.  

5. It is a hot day in July. They call these days the dog days of summer. It is humid. It is sticky. It is oppressive. I don't want to go out in this weather. It is a summer blizzard.
