Jason is pulling a box across the room. He is pulling with a force of 23 newtons and his arm is making a 57 angle with the horizontal, if the box weighs 30 newtons what is the net force on the box in the vertical direction? Treat up as the positive direction, and down as the negative direction.

Add up all the forces in the vertical direction.
Use trig to see that the force he's pulling up on the box is 23N * sin 57
The force down is 30N since that's the weight of the box.
Add the two forces and make sure the 30N is negative since it's in the downward direction
