Jay Gatsby's death is significant as it symbolizes the demise of the American dream. The American dream purports that anyone, regardless of their birth status, can achieve upward mobility through hard work.

Ultimately, Gatsby's death eliminates this dream for all of the characters. Specifically, Nick loses his bond with the upper class and Daisy loses her opportunity to find true love. The death of Gatsby is significant because it symbolizes the loss of the American dream, not only for Gatsby but also for the other main characters, as well. I don't want to explain how Gatsby's death caused the loss of the American Dream for the other characters, as I feel you should do some of the work, figuring that part out for yourself.
