Gametogenesis, which is the formation of gametes, typically occurs through meiosis. During meiosis, the parent cell, which is diploid, splits into four haploid cells. So, if the parent cell divides in a non-meiotic manner, the daughter cells will not each be haploid. This means that future diploid organisms in the following generation could potentially have too many chromosomes, as there will be gametes with improper amounts of chromosomes. This could lead to various defects, or even the unviability of the zygote.
