- The circle represents a female family member while the square represents a male family member. If the shape is colored in, that means the family member is affected by the disease. In this case, since the circle is colored, it means that the female is affected by the disease. Since the person is female and expresses this recessive sex-linked trait, that means the genotype of the person is homozygous recessive (expresses hemophilia).
- Applying the same rules stated previously, the colored square indicates an affected male. The genotype of this male is also recessive, so he too has hemophilia.
- Here, we have an uncolored square, which indicates an unaffected male. Since the male does not have hemophilia, it means he has a dominant genotype.
