Question

Student: I also didn’t like that Wanda walks to school alone and that the girls laugh at her so much. I am curious about why Wanda says she has a hundred dresses and sixty shoes.

Viridiana: I’m not sure if she’s lying or telling the truth but I think she’s lying.

Student: She may be lying to the girls so they won’t make fun of her for being poor. I don’t like that they keep on asking her how many dresses she has just so they can continue laughing at her.

6. You have read the entire book, so you know the significance of the hundred dresses. At this point, They are talking about chapter 2, so readers do not know that yet.

What do you see taking place here in regard to high levels of comprehension be modeled/taught by the Student?

The student is sympathetic to Wanda being bullied and excluded because she appears dissimilar to those in her peer group at school. The student identifies with Wanda perhaps herself being less advantaged and feeling she has to compensate in some way to be accepted.
