The mutually exclusive event was the blue eyes or white spots. vs the rest. You either had one of the traits or you didn't. Odds 1:3 for HAVING a trait
Odds of having blue eyes vs spots if you are in the 'trait' group are 1:1
Odds of not having blue eyes and still being in that group are 3:7, this is because there are 2:3 odds that you will have both traits (non mutually exclusive event - i.e. interaction). Which means odds of being in that group (blue eyes) are 7:3
The odds of having blue eyes are then 7 : 33 , which is the same as a 17.5% chance of success.
