Probability Question

  1. For a particular species of cat, the odds against a kitten being born with either blue eyes or white spots are 3:1. If the probability of a kitten exhibiting only one of these traits is equal and the probability of exhibiting both traits is 10%, what are the odds in favour of a kitten having blue eyes?

Well, if you noticed, my answer ended by saying that if you wanted an odds ratio instead of a percentage, you had to reverse the process I used earlier. The odds ratio 7:33 and the percentage 17.5% are the same. The answer is right. I made sure it was not in a format that could be plugged in directly to an answer for a quiz or exam. The reader still had to take the last step. BTW, that was this: if % =.175 odds = .175:(1-.175) Multiply by 1000. Divide by GCD of 25 gives 7:33 You can work it out yourself. Next time remember that the Wyzant goal is to help learn, not help cheat.
