First, let's address what stress means. Stress represents the FORCE applied to an object causing it to change either in the object's length, volume, or the shape
1) Tensile stress - object gets longer
2) Compressional stress - changes the volume of the object,
3) Sheer Stress: changes the shape of an object.
Second, lets discuss strain. Strain is the measure of how much the original object is changed when stress is applied. There are three types of stress.
1) Tensile strain - caused by tensile stress; the length changes.
2) Compressional or volumetric strain - caused by pressing an object together and the volume changes. The formula for volume is V = l x w x h. Find out how much the volume changed.
3) Sheer strain - caused when opposite forces causes an object to be pushed and pulled in opposite directions.
