A. What is a contemporary problem in your home, community, or country that is on your mind? ( within the past five years; if the problem started before this time, explain why it's significant to you now). There may be a particular issue related to your major or career you'd like to explore.
B. Describe one recent news story, reading, social media post, video, conversation, or event that inspired your thoughts.
C. Do you believe globalization helps this problem or makes it worse? Again, we are defining globalization as a set of complex processes by which goods, services, capital, ideas, and culture are exchanged on the international level among different countries.

Hello David: right now we have been in lockdown from Covid for one year and up to 1 1/2 years in many places. I don't know if you tried to go out and buy a new pair of tennis shoes lately (or any kind of trainers) only to find that you can't find any shoes that fit. I did this recently and REI had exactly two pairs of shoes in the brand I wanted. It was this way in several stores. When asked why this was, I was advised that the shoes are now all made in China and the goods cannot be delivered to the USA because of lockdowns by Covid. This is an example of globalized manufacturing and what happens when the 'chain' gets interrupted and there are no local resources. Not such a great idea now, eh? Thanks, Courtney Webb

The issue of illegal immigrantion is a complex issue in America and Europe today. One and a half million illegal immigrants enter the United States at our Southern border and 2 million people overstay their toutist visas as they enter major United States airports for vacations or to visit families.
My sources are the major news networks, MSNBC, CNN and Fox News, as well the Thursday, July 1st New York Times article entitled Showing Migrants Through Their Own Lens. Our news outlets carry stories of human traffickers bringing people across the Rio Grande illegally. The smugglers are not apprehended as our U.S. border patrol agents know that the smugglers will push women and children, many of them non-swimmers, overboard, if they are apprehended. Dentention Centers are overcrowded and processing the huge influx of people coming in is a difficult problem.
How goes globalization make this problem better or worse? This is a massive humanitarian social problem, Certainly, a country as large and prosperous as the United States can assimilate some of the immigrants. My belief is that those who apply for political asylum and have families here already, should be given a five year work visa and a clear path to citizenship. Because countries cherish their own identity, language and cultural customs and are not anxious to take more immigrants, we have a worldwide crisis. In the United States, I believe we have the resources and capacity to help many of these needy people.
