This is a great question. My recommendation would be to read the last 5 pages of the book again. Toward the end, Jonas is taking Gabriel to the cabin, but he's exhausted. What context clues does the story give you to determine whether he made it or not? What do you think? There is no right or wrong answer.
"For a moment, they were bathed in warmth and a renewed strength"
"But his mind was alert now"
"Shaken away the lethargy and resignation and restored his will to survive"
"He was aware with certainty and joy... that they were waiting for him"
These statements are all fairly positive and uplifting statements and may indicate that Gabriel and Jonas reached their intended destination. But what comes next? What happens to his friends and family in the Community?
The author continues, "Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo." Will there still be sameness? Will there still be no envy, jealousy, fatigue, hunger, etc.? Will the community change or stay the same? This part of the question is really more about using your imagination.
