If you have to choose between having a family and having a good socialist society, which would you choose and why?

Reflect on your reading of Rosemarie Ho’s interview with Sophie Lewis, “Want to Dismantle Capitalism? Abolish the Family” and Jonathan Newman’s article, “Why Do Socialists Hate Families?.” In a post of a minimum of 150 words

Thank you. Can you provide some ideas from the reading that I can reflect on?

Of course! Newman explains using a quote from another author, that “ It will transform the relations between the sexes into a purely private matter which concerns only the persons involved and into which society has no occasion to intervene. It can do this since it does away with private property and educates children on a communal basis, and in this way removes the two bases of traditional marriage – the dependence rooted in private property, of the women on the man, and of the children on the parents.” Basically, this is how a good socialist society will undermine the ideas of family that we are used to: if we have that society, even the education of our children and construction and operation of our immediate families will be communal rather than private and personal. So, would you rather be able to make your own decisions within your family and run it the way you choose, or worry less about that and work together within a society to do the same type of work communally? The following quote gets at the heart of Sophie Lewis’s argument: “ Her new book, Full Surrogacy Now: Feminism Against Family (Verso, 2019) specifically links family abolition to a radical reconceptualization of pregnancy itself. The act of carrying a child to term, she insists, is work—labor that has long been exploited and overlooked by the academy—and so is mothering.” It suggests that mothering, and parenting in general, should be a job and a choice rather than a societal expectation of the woman in every traditional family. So, the question here is, do you agree that surrogacy and motherhood should be a job and children should be raised communally to allow for more freedom for parents to work and live their own lives, or do you believe that having and raising children should continue to be something that happens more privately within individually families? In your response you will either be arguing against the ideas in these two articles or supporting their points with your own opinions. If you’d like any more help than this please send me a message and we can set up a formal lesson!
