Other characters can be called antagonists, foil, or supporting characters. An antagonist directly opposes the main character or the protagonist. They are responsible for creating conflict in the narrative. A foil is a character that is the opposite of the protagonist. This usually highlights certain characteristics in the protagonist. Supporting characters help move the action of the plot. So, if the protagonist needs to slay a dragon then they usually have supporting characters to help the protagonist complete this task. In addition, they might also have a foil or antagonist that challenges the protagonist on their quest to slay the dragon. Other characters help move the plot through a narrative arc that begins, climaxes, and is resolved by the end of the story.
