In the short story “More Room,” Judith Ortiz Cofer explains her childhood story where she lived with her grandmother. The main idea of the text is that we must make sacrifices in our lives to obtain greater control and to achieve the freedom we desire. You should not have to sacrifice your own happiness in a relationship to satisfy your partner. Every time Mama got pregnant, she would ask her husband to add an extra room to the main house that way she could live with his children. The mama has a bigger room than those of them, where she gave birth to her children and also made many recommendations concerning the marriage to his young daughters. Mama was different from any other woman; her room did not contain makeup but remedies for her children. There were several types of herbs that could help them at different times in their lives. Mama authority is strong when she left her key on her dresser to check if any of her kids would find out what Mom was hiding in her closet, but the kids didn't even try to look. Because of the many children that mama had, her walls were filled with gifts from different states of America and also she had a lot of Catholic objects in her room. She asked her husband to build a new bedroom but this time it is for him and not for the new baby. In return, she wanted to take care of her body and enjoy her life with her children.
