The Harry Potter series is wildly popular with both children and adults. Is a book series like Harry Potter children’s literature, adult literature, or something else? How would you categorize it?

Interesting inquiry. I would classify it as fantasy generally, considered its wide-reaching popularity among readers of all ages. It likely is on par with The Lord of the Rings, the most widely-read literature besides The Bible (last I heard). The Hobbit may be a better comparison overall, since it was meant for younger readers but enjoys massive popularity for all readers. Because of such a wide readership, some works, like Harry Potter, transcend genres and intended age groups. We see this occur in other aspects of the arts as well.
