Lord of the Flies - Debate

My class and I just finished Chapter 9 of Lord of the Flies and we are doing a debate on whether or not Simon's death was an accident or an impulsive act. My topic is that The boys thought they were attacking the beast. (Accident). I need help coming up with arguments for this fact using quotes from Chapters 5 through Chapter 9.

Sounds as if that is work that you need to do on your own. Reread those chapters. If the book is your own, make margin notes. If you do not own the book, take notes of relevant passages and include the page numbers. Then go back and make a list of quotes, the context, and the page numbers. This should leave you prepared with ammunition for the debate.

I agree with Wendy D. As you're reviewing those chapters, pay attention to what the characters were thinking, feeling, and doing. You'll be able to use those details to think through your arguments. It's best to have at least 3 different supporting details. Pretend you're a lawyer defending the boys from going to jail. How would you persuade a jury that the death was an accident? You might want to write a statement like this to get started: Simon's death was an accident because __________, __________, and __________. Good luck! Feel free to sign up for an appointment. We're glad to help! 😊

Thank you! I re-read the chapters while thinking about the topic and I found a bunch of arguments!
