Among the eras that you listed, my personal favorite is the Greek era. Ancient Greece had the most direct democratic system in recorded history and direct democracy, particularly participatory democracy, would be my preferred government system. Keep in mind that the Greeks had slaves and that only property owning men could be citizens, so the only people who could be a part of this direct democracy were property owning, non-slave men. Also keep in mind that direct democracy requires small geographic boundaries. It would be extremely difficult to have a direct democracy in a country as large as the United States, or most any country for the most part. Smaller units like states or provinces might be amenable to participatory direct democracy. One thing that worries me about this system, however, would be social tyrannies, like racial oppression or mass hysteria, for example.
