- The barriers to successful communication include emotions and the differentiation in ideas. When two people are emotional, their reactions prevent them from thinking and speaking clearly. Their emotions take over, their prefrontal cortex (the seat of logic) is less active than the amygdala (the seat of emotions and fear) and they cannot express the true problem or issue at hand. They have trouble understanding what they want or need. Differentiation in ideas can also lead to a breakdown in communication. If one person has an idea and the other has a differing idea, then the two have a more difficult time communicating. For example, if one person thinks a relationship is going well, but the second person is having a horrible time, communication is needed to bridge that gap. Language can also be a barrier, as two people have to communicate in the same way to understand. If one person is sarcastic, but another is serious, the two have different styles and find issues intersecting their understanding.
