I, too, sing America.

I am the darker brother.

They send me to eat in the kitchen

When company comes,

But I laugh,

And eat well,

And grow strong.

Tomorrow,

Nobody'll dare

Say to me,

“Eat in the kitchen,”

Then.

Besides,

They'll see how beautiful I am

And be ashamed—

Think about the meaning of the word, "too". It means also which actually is a very inclusive word giving a deeper meaning to the poem. The poet character though being shunned by society has a bulletin sense of self esteem and self respect. He is intelligent, and for the time being accepting of the social injustice and current situation. Accepting? Yes, temporarily because his attitude is a strength which allows him to have the self satisfaction of not only believing but knowing that things will change and he will rise about the prejudice which tries to hold him back. He does not feel totally submissive because his belief in himself is stronger than the status quo and he knows he will see better days. He has the serenity to ...the courage...and the wisdom...
