I believe poets are used at the inauguration because they represent an "ideal" in our democracy,- that freedom of speech and the beauty of our language is part of what America wants to project in its image.

Choosing a poet would be a challenge to the president. He must be careful to choose one that expresses his ideas of democracy and freedom and also one that has perhaps struggled and gained wisdom by honing their talent in our country.
