The letter “y” could be a consonant or a vowel. “Y” makes the consonant /y/ sound in words like yellow and yes. In a closed syllable, “y” makes the short i sound (gym). At the end of an open one syllable word, “y” makes the long i sound (cry). When “y” is an open syllable at the end of of a multisyllabic word, it usually makes the long e sound (baby). However, it sometimes makes the long i sound (reply). The vowel “y” in a vowel -consonant -e syllable makes the long i sound (type).
