This is a really great question. As a teacher currently teaching in an online format, I'm seeing that it is helping several of my students to be more independent. There are several reasons why students are forced to become more independent. First of all, they often don't have immediate access to a teacher who can provide them assistance. In a typical classroom, you could ask the teacher a question at anytime, however in an online setting, the student often has to trouble shoot and look for the answer on their one. Another way that online education is helping students to become more independent is students have the responsibility to keep track pf deadlines and assignments. They are likely not being told on a daily basis what assignments they have coming up or when the deadlines are. Students have to take responsibility and keep track of their own agendas. Lastly, with students learning online, no one is forcing them to participate or keeping them accountable. Students must take accountability for their own learning and take the initiative when it comes to their education.
