The setting of all Shakespeare plays is a place in society so far back in time it has become inaccessible to many people. By changing the setting (for example, Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet, which changes the setting but not any of the script) the producer makes the play easier to digest because the visuals and context clues are within a familiar setting. By making more dramatic changes, producers can tailor stories to specific audiences and introduce classic themes and stories to familiar and interesting people and places (note the similarities between The Lion King and Hamlet).
