“Ball of fire crash” kills 7 Cold Lake, Alberta—A transport plane crashed in a giant ball of fire near a runway at an air force base yesterday, killing all seven people aboard. The cause of the crash is not yet known. The crash set a building ablaze but no ground casualties were reported. The Lockheed L100-20, the civil version of the military C-130 Hercules, was owned by the Lockheed Aircraft Co. and was on an engineering test mission when it crashed. All those on board were Lockheed employees. A motorist said: “He was flying exceptionally low. He made a very steep left turn. The plane went out of sight, but then I saw a huge ball of fire.” The plane broke apart and a column of thick black smoke rose into the sky. Firefighter Ralph Bryant said his unit was the first on the scene, arriving about a minute after the crash. “Fire and smoke, that’s all we saw initially,” he said. Fire crews battled the blaze with a heavy foam.
