Hello!
To solve for P...
7/8 = 1/4 + p
-1/4 -1/4 (Subtract 1/4 from both sides of the equation)
To subtract fractions, first you have to make the denominator (bottom of the fraction) equal for both terms. To make 4ths into 8ths, we need to multiply the denominator (4) by 2 to get a new denominator, 8. We will multiply the numerator (the top of the fraction) by 2 as well to make sure that it is equal.
1 × 2 = 2
4 × 2 = 8 (multiply numerator and denominator by 2)
~You can check your work for this part by dividing 2÷8 = .25. Make sure that this is equal to 1÷4 = .25~
Now, back to subtracting the fractions: Now that they are in the same terms (8ths), we just have to subtract the numerators.
7 - 2 = 5
8 8 8
So we know that p= 5/8.
I hope this was helpful! Please reach out if you have any questions and maybe we can set up a lesson!
