For Georgiana, the birthmark represents human morality. In the end of the story, attempting to get rid of it is what causes her death. Alymer wrongly believes that the birthmark represents Georgiana's spiritual impurity and sin. At the end of the story, the birthmark comes to symbolize guilt. Alymer feels guilty for killing his wife by trying to remove her one flaw.
