The mood of a poem is the feeling you get from reading the work. In this case, the mood of “The Raven” is generally really dreary and ominous. You can prove that this is the mood by the words Poe chooses, such as dreary, sad, uncertain, terrors, vainly, wrought, etc. These words give off a negative connotation, which means that they imply sadness or a negative emotion.
The speaker’s despair adds to the mood by creating a really scared and frightened mood. He is constantly concerned about the tapping he hears, with lines such as “Back into the chamber turning, all my soul within me burning”. He is acting manic, which can also be seen as he questions the meaning of “Nevermore” to an obsessive extent.
The last paragraph nails the roof on the coffin in regards to the mood of the story, with the line “And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor, Shall be lifted-nevermore”. This ending implies that the speaker has succumbed to his sadness, and that he will forever be sad. This sadness is due to the death of his lover, which he previous mentioned in the poem.
