Hello Kate,
C.S. Lewis was a professor of Medieval Literature. In Out of The Silent Planet, Lewis plays on the Medieval idea that the planets actually make music while they spin in the heavens. The reason we cannot hear them is because the music is always there, like water is for a fish. If the music suddenly stopped, people would feel incalculable loss. In Lewis's story, the eldils of Earth (beings that are like angels) separated themselves from the rest of the Planets. They broke from the heavenly song in rebellion and remain silent.
