In C. S. Lewis’s science-fiction novel, Out of the Silent Planet, the lovable creatures called the Hrossa use the mournful term “bent” to describe a being that has turned against “The Old One,” the Creator of all. Just as a bent fork can still be somewhat useful, bent creatures are not thoroughly useless or evil, but in the novel, the bent Oyarsa of Thulcandra (Earth) has chosen silent isolation from the rest of the Heavens to go its own way. Thus, Thulcandra is “silent,” and no longer in communication with The Old One or His creation. As each of Thulcandra’s inhabitants follows the lead of its Oyarsa in going its own way, becoming “bent,” this has turned them from their intended purpose of being in harmonious connection with all beings in the The Old One’s universe. A bent fork may not do much damage to its user, but a bent scalpel can result in the death of a patient.
