Obierika blames the District Commissioner for Okonkwo's suicide. Obierika believes this because Okonkwo killed himself once he knew that the District Commissioner was coming to arrest him after the killing of the messenger. Okonkwo no longer had the support of his village because their traditions had changed so drastically and so, he felt he no longer had anything to live for. Obierika attributes these changes in their society to the presence of the District Commissioner and his men who have been trying to pacify and colonialize the natives.
