Hi Elena, This question is quite involved! Lets break it down into a few parts.
- What are the current therapeutic strategies for treating HER2-positive breast cancer?
- How are therapeutic resistance (such as antibiotic resistant infections) managed?
- How are adverse side effects (such as cardiotoxicity) managed?
To answer these questions look through your lectures (slides, notes, handouts etc) and your book, as well as any case studies you may have been given. You may have to search in a medical database for journal articles on the most up to date research articles for the current therapeutic strategies for treating HER2-positive breast cancer. You should be able to access this through your school's library system. Let me know if I can help you out with anything else!

Lumpectomy is a standard part of a treatment plan for most tumor-causing breast cancers. If you reread the question you will see that the patient has already had a lumpectomy, and the question asks about what the next steps are for treating HER2-positive breast cancer specifically. That means that after the lumpectomy the tumor was biopsied and tested via ISC or (rarely) FISH to determine if the cancer cells were HER2 positive. Since they are, the treatment plan needs to be specific to the type of breast cancer. This patient would get better results from targeted drug therapy, which attach to the HER2 protein, it’s a kinase inhibitors and effectively the cell can’t produce that protein anymore, stops replicating, and eventually dies. Targeted drug therapy is often used in conjunction with chemotherapy to be most effective, although if the cancer is caught early chemo may be unnecessary. All of this information is readily available online. Simply googling “HER2 positive breast cancer treatment” and reading through reliable websites would help you get there. If you would like some tips on determining if a website is a good and reliable source of information I can send you a few links, just message me.
