asked 10/09/20the sum of two numbers is 19 and their difference is 9 what is the answer
1 Expert Answer
Hello, Chloe,
Call the two numbers X and Y. Then write out what the problem states:
X + Y = 19, and
X - Y = 9
Rearrange the second to: X = Y + 9, and then use that in the first equation:
(Y + 9) + Y = 19
2Y + 9 = 19
2Y = 10
Y = 5
Use this in either equation to find X:
X + 5 = 19
X = 14
See if the two numbers work in the two equations.
