Maqsood told me that he would hire more salesmen if he were in my position. This is an unreal conditional sentence with a hypothetical outcome that would result in the present.
- It should be "salesmen" not "salesman" because it is preceded by "more", so there is more than one salesman
- This is a conditional sentence so the "if clause" must have a past tense verb, A & B are both grammatically incorrect as they are in the present tense.
- Option C is grammatically incorrect because it uses "has been" in the "if clause". "Has been" is the present perfect tense which refers to action that began in the past and is still in progress. Thus, the present perfect tense is never used in the "if clause" of a hypothetical sentence such as this.
- Option D is almost correct. You need to make it: Maqsood told me that he would have hired more salesmen if he had been in my position. This is an unreal conditional sentence with a hypothetical outcome that would result in the past.
