I think that the key here is the type of oppression that these women are experiencing. Mrs. Mallard is a white woman of privilege who is oppressed by the institution of marriage. The speaker of Angelou's "Cage Bird," by way of contrast, is a person of ethnicity who exists within systems of oppression which keep them from experiencing freedom. The subject of Lange's "Migrant Mother," in turn, is a white woman suffering class oppression in the context of the Great Depression.
