A clause is a complete thought expressed as a sentence. In other words, it has a subject (noun) and a predicate (verb). Here's an example: "Sue went to the store." This sentence contains one clause.
Here's another example: "After her dance recital, Sue went to the store." This is still one sentence but it contains two clauses. I hope this helps.
