Hi, Amare. A summary can be a page, a paragraph, or even a single sentence. Whatever the summary's length, it must capture the central idea of the text being summarized. Can you give author Michael Rosenwald's overall message about Robert Kennedy's speech in one sentence? That can be your first sentence.
The length of your summary determines what goes into the rest of your writing. You have a paragraph, which should contain 5-10 sentences. Use the article's three sections (intro and two bold subheadings) to get you started. Can you capture the most important ideas of each section in a sentence or two?
Think about summarizing as filtering out the pearls of wisdom from all the sand and other stuff in a bucket. If you had to tell a friend about this article, what would you say? "Hey, did you know that Robert Kennedy..."
While a summary can attempt to capture all the key facts, your goal here should be to identify the key ideas. If Rosenwald had to call his editors at the newspaper about a great story idea, what six or seven things would he say to get permission to write the story? He would give the main points he was thinking of making, but he would use different words than those that ended up in the actual writing. You can do the same. In your words, share Rosenwald's interesting thoughts about that important speech. Just make sure you capture Rosenwald's ideas, not your response or reaction to the article or your opinion about the issue.
Two sentences capturing the story of what happened.
One sentence explaining Rosenwald's first main point.
One sentence adding some detail about that point.
One sentence explaining the author's second main point.
One sentence adding some detail about the second point.
One closing sentence capturing the author's overall message about the event.
Summarizing can be challenging at first, but it is an essential skill that you will need every time you research or need to inform someone, and it does get easier with practice.
Good luck!
Michael
