Why does d sometimes sound like t?

At the end of the word raced, the d sounds like a t. At the end of the word raised, the d sounds like a d. Also in managed, the d sounds like d. In launched, the d sounds like t again. Why is this?

In English there are voiced and unvoiced sounds. When a word ends with a voiced sound prior to the "ed" suffix the d will sound like a d. When the words ends with an unvoiced sound just before the "ed" suffix the d will sound like a t.

Put your hand on your throat when you say "z" as in raised. Do you feel a vibration? This is a voiced sound.

Put your hand on your throat when you say "s" as in raced. You no longer feel the vibration. This is an UNvoiced sound. The same is true for managed and launched.The soft g sound in managed sounds like a j, but you still feel the vibration making it a voiced sound. (Soft g does not mean unvoiced!) With "ch" as in launched, however, you do not feel the vibration so the d sounds like t.
