If “By the Waters of Babylon” were told from John’s father’s point of view instead of John’s, the story would be very different. John’s father is cautious and wise, respecting the old laws and traditions that warn against exploring forbidden places. From his perspective, we would see more fear and concern about keeping their people safe rather than curiosity about the past. The mystery of the “Place of the Gods” might seem more dangerous and holy, not something to be discovered but to be avoided. Instead of a journey of discovery and courage, the story would become one about protecting knowledge and obeying limits. We might hear more about the responsibilities of being a priest and keeping the tribe’s beliefs strong. The tone would likely be more serious and less adventurous. We also would not experience the surprise of learning that the “gods” were actually people from a destroyed civilization. In my opinion, this point of view would not make the story better because it would take away the excitement and wonder of John’s discoveries. The story is more powerful when told by John, who dares to explore and helps readers see hope for the future through his eyes.

Please simply explain how the story would change if this alternate point of view had been used. In your opinion, would this point of view have made the story better? If not, please explain why not.
