From what i recollect, after Charles the First was beheaded, the English people realized their cumulative power, so that when Charles the Second was crowned, after having been exiled in France, Restoration Comedy of Manners emerged, making fun of royalty and courtly conduct as being ignorant of the changing times and irrelevant, but don't quote me on any of this.:)
