What an idyllic, simple life! For a child growing up in such a peaceful environment it must have seemed like heaven although, like most of us, he wouldn't have known it until much later in life. The Grandmother doted on the boy, making sure he had all he needed. She made him feel loved and wanted by her constant attention tempered, I'm sure, with a healthy dose of the gentle guidance to the straight and narrow road.
In return he respected and admired her. That is shown in the loving way he writes about her good qualities of charity and her treatment of the lesser creatures. He writes about how she was always there for him at the school giving him a sense of safety and peace.
It was a wonderful, mutually gratifying relationship.
