Dogs are basically wolves that have been artificially selected by man to be less aggressive and more "compatible with man" The process has occurred over thousands of years . If a dog/wolf is not compatible with man ( i.e bites his children) the dog is probably killed and not allowed to propagate, so the alleles of that dog have less probability of making it to the next generation. If a dog is especially compatible with man, and is viewed among the human social structure as being desirable, there will be pressure to try to have tat particular dog produce more progeny than usual so those alleles have a higher probability of making it to the next generation and multiplying.
In todays world in laboratories, artificial selection can be faster because it is more focused. A scientist, for example, can choose from among 100 corn kernels and choose the top 5% in oil content, and only breed those particular kernels. The next generation the scientist will have kernels with higher oil content ( a higher percentage of the alleles in the population will be above average with regard to oil production. and select among those the highest 5% in oil content. If there are say 5 different loci contributing to oil content than after several generations, if there are only 2 possible alleles for each loci, then *** the corn will be close to homozygous for all five loci with the all alleles being being above average for oil production.

The evolution of wolf to dog is still unknown no one really knows how that happened. A much better example is all the new breeds of dogs we see around us, the breeds were generated by artificial selection and breeding programs05/28/20
